SB 5829
Washington State’s CMV Bill
On March 14, 2024, Governor Jay Inslee signed the Washington State prenatal CMV education bill, SB 5829. This bill requires the Department of Health to develop and make available educational resources for pregnant individuals about the nature and consequences of in utero exposure to cytomegalovirus and strategies to reduce transmission. It also directs the state Board of Health to consider adding congenital CMV to the mandatory screening panel by December 31, 2025.
This bill was introduced to the Washington State Legislature at the beginning of the 2024 Legislative Session. The bill’s primary sponsor is Senator Noel Frame (D) and the secondary sponsor is Senator Ann Rivers (R). The Washington State House of Representatives introduced a companion bill HB2067, sponsored by Representative Marcus Riccelli (D).
